One-to-one/Small Groups


One-to-one and small group sessions are ideal for anyone who cannot get to the groups or if you want a more intensive flexible session to fit in with work or family commitments.  One-to-one and small group sessions are customised to your requirements covering all aspects of dressmaking and pattern cutting.

Courses are usually held the UCTuition studio at The Ropewalk, Barton upon Humber, N Lincs (Sewing machine & Overlocker 2 hour skills sessions are at UCTuition, Skidby, East Yorkshire)
 
Daytime, evening or weekend one-off sessions or longer courses can be booked.

Programme:

  • Overlocking - for beginners, new owners and the terrified!

Dressmaking Tuition

Cost:  £135 full day
One-to-one or small group sessions are customised to your requirements and are suitable for all abilities from beginner to advanced.  You can learn basic dressmaking skills, how to use and adapt commercial patterns, tailoring, couture techniques, explore and sample a specific technique, resolve those frustrating fitting problems or get help with a project you're stuck on and at the same time get the most from your sewing machine or overlocker.
Equipment: none required but you are welcome to bring along you own sewing machine

Pattern Cutting

skirt, trouser, bodice, jacket blocks and style adaptations

Venue: The Ropewalk, Barton upon Humber or other venues by arrangement
Dates & times:  flexible sessions by arrangement
Cost: £135 full day
If you find getting commerical patterns to fit frustrating or you want to make your own stylish designs this is the course for you.
You will learn how to take accurate body measurements and how these, and body shape, affect fit.  You will draft basic garment blocks from your measurements, make and fit a toile (fitting shell) and learn the basic techniques to manipulate your blocks into garment patterns with stylish individuality.
Equipment:  None required.

Overlocking for beginners, new owners and the terrified!

Venue: UCTuition, Skidby, Nr Beverley, East Yorkshire or other venues by arrangement
Dates & times:  flexible sessions by arrangement
Cost: £40 including materials (2 hour session)
This 2 hour session will cover all those important basics that will help you tame, control and get the most from your overlocker:
  • Changing the needles
  • Easy threading
  • The lower looper
  • Identifying and adjusting the tension dials to achieve perfect stitching
  • Starting and finishing methods
  • Dealing with difficult fabrics such as chiffon and jersey.
  • Narrow overlocking
  • Rolled hemming
  • Overlocker make to take home
Equipment:  overlocker, instruction manual, accessories (optional).  If you do not have a machine but are thinking of buying one I do have a machine you can use.

Sewing Machine Skills                                   

Venue: UCTuition, Skidby, Nr Beverley, East Yorkshire or other venues by arrangement
Dates & times:  flexible sessions by arrangement
Cost: £40 including materials (2 hour session)
Are you new to sewing, have just purchased a new machine or would you like to be more confident with your sewing machine?  This 2 hour session will get you up and running and getting the most from your machine and its accessories.
We will cover:
  • Thread and threading
  • Winding bobbins
  • Tension
  • Stitch length
  • How to get a good quality stitch
  • Sewing in straight lines and curves
  • Using challenging fabrics eg chiffon, jersey
  • Decorative stitches
  • Buttonholes
  • Feed dogs and free machine stitching
Equipment: sewing machine, instruction manual, accessories. If you do no have a machine I do have one you can use.


Post Graduate & NQT

training in garment construction and pattern cutting

Cost: £130
As far as I am aware I am the only learning provider offering the opportunity for you to build a portfolio of technical samples and garments, in a flexible way, that you can use in teaching, as a designer/maker or to take to interview.  You can brush up your existing skills, learn new skills and grow in confidence with your practical skills.
Sessions are customised to your requirements. 

Textile Teacher Staff Development

Overlocker, Pattern Cutting, Sewing Skills
Venue:  Venues by arrangement
Dates & times:  flexible sessions by arrangement
Cost: £250 + travelling (full day session for up to 4 members of staff)
A session customised to your requirements.  You could:
  • Make the most of your school's overlockers.  Starting with the basics discover easy threading, needle changing and how to balance the tension dials for a perfect stitch.  Use the differential feed for stretch fabrics.  Explore rolled hemming, rolled hemming with fishing line, using decorative threads, mock blanket stitch and wrapped edge stitch to produce a range of samples and simple products.
  • Learn or refresh your pattern cutting and pattern adaptation skills to create more interesting and better fitting garments.
  • Explore your garment construction skills by building a portfolio of those basic but crucial technique samples, for example zips, seams, hems etc.
